Rouen

Established in 1899, the club currently competes in Championnat National, which is the third tier of French football. The team plays their home games at Stade Robert Diochon, named after the influential player Robert Diochon from the club's early years. FC Rouen is affectionately called Les Diables Rouges (The Red Devils), a title they have held since 1903. Although Rouen's football division was founded in 1899, the club itself originated in 1896 as a rugby club. They turned professional in 1933 and have enjoyed 19 seasons in the top division and 36 seasons in the second division of French football. The club's most significant achievement so far came in 1936 when they won the second division title. While they were crowned league champions in 1940 and 1945, these titles are not official due to the circumstances of World War II. In terms of international competitions, Rouen participated in the 1969–70 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, where they were eliminated by Arsenal, the eventual champions, in the third round with a 1–0 aggregate score. Aside from their success on the field, Rouen has also produced notable players who represented the France national team in its early years. Edmond Delfour, who made 41 appearances for France from 1929 to 1938, played in three pre-war FIFA World Cups. Another player, Jean Nicolas, spent his entire professional career with Rouen and scored 21 goals in 25 matches for the national team between 1933 and 1938. Nicolas remains one of the top goal scorers in the club's history, ranking tenth in total goals and tied for third in goal average.
